FEC Consents Establishment of Humanitarian Trust Fund

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has revealed during the Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa on 23rd October 2023, that the FEC has given the go-ahead for the creation of A Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund, this is to aid the Federal Government to cushion the economic hardship on vulnerable Nigerians. Edu while briefing the State House Correspondents at the meeting revealed that the establishment of this fund is to generate up to $5 million yearly. Also, there will be a governing board that will help in supervising the implementation of the fund.

Members governing the board will involve the minister for finance and other ministers that would be needed in the process. She said," This is a flexible form of financing that is supposed to help Nigeria adequately respond to humanitarian crises and challenges as well as adequately address the issue of poverty in Nigeria. "This of course is a victory for the poor and indeed, would bring help and succor which Renewed Hope Agenda stands for.”

She stated that the council has given approval for the ratification of the protocol on the protection of the rights of older persons in Nigeria. The Minister revealed that the funding process will be 30 percent from the Federal Government while 70 percent would be from donor agencies, with all measures put in place to show transparency and accountability.
