The Nigerian Senate on Thursday confirmed that the Police has handed over the mace which was snatched from the floor of the Red chamber on Wednesday at plenary. The Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, who confirmed the development in his opening address at the plenary stressed that the Senate would insist on the arrest and prosecution of the suspects,
saying that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, would be invited to brief the lawmakers next week on their investigation of the crime.
Ekweremadu decried the security breach that led to the invasion of the Senate Chamber, wondering how the thugs successfully beat all security operatives at the various points and gained unhindered access to the chamber before snatching the mace.
Prior to the return of the mace to the Senate, the Nigerian Police had stated that the mace was recovered under a bridge before the City Gate. In a statement released to newsmen, the Police said a passerby had spotted the mace before drawing the attention of the police.
