Following President Muhammadu Buhari's decision to withhold assent to the Amended Electoral Bill that sought to reorder the sequence of the 2019 general elections, the House of Representatives on Wednesday reintroduced the controversial Bill for first reading. The move was in accordance to its earlier resolve to delete some sections of the Bill, debate, pass and then return it to the President for eventual assent.
According to Punch, the House is of the opinion that should the President withhold assent again, it would override the veto.
It was gathered that the represented Bill still retained the reordered sequence of the elections with the Presidential poll coming last.
Recall that the House of Reps had soon after Buhari withheld his assent to the bill on three grounds said that it accepted two of the reasons the President gave, but insisted that the power to fix the order of elections resided with the National Assembly.
It promised to take out the two areas in which it was in agreement with Buhari and pass the bill afresh for his assent.
Consequently, on Wednesday, the new bill passed first reading at the session, which was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara. The sponsor of the bill, Mr. Sunday Karimi, told The PUNCH that the House kept its promise and was determined to have the bill passed with the reordered elections sequence.
