President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the re-appointment of Prof. Mahmud Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after his first tenure elapsed. Prof. Yakubu who his tenure was expected to elapse on November 9th, 2020 came on board for the first time in 2015. He has earned another five years to serve at the electoral empire boss.
As contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed Buhari has communicated the Senate of his decision to retain Mahmud in the electoral office as the Chair.
According to the letter sent to the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the statement reads; ‘I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term,”
His re-appointment barely comes when the next round of General election is less than 30 months.
Prof. Mahmud, a native of Bauchi state, born in 1962, he studied History at the University of Sokoto now Danfodio University, from 1980 to 1985.
He graduated with a first-class honors degree to become the best graduating student in his set and the first student from northern Nigeria to graduate with a first-class in history.
In 2007, he was appointed the executive secretary of the Education Trust Fund (ETF), now Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), where he weld influence until 2012 after which he was co-opted as a technical member of the implementation monitoring committee (IMC) on the presidential special intervention fund for the revitalization of Nigerian public universities.
He holds a doctor of law from the Danfodiyo University, Sokoto as well as a doctor of letters from the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
