Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has dismissed speculations from some quarters that the All Progressive Congress (APC) as a party has declined their campaign promise of restructuring they promised Nigerians.
The Governor disclosed that the APC in its quest it deliver its campaign promises, set up the El-Rufa’i Committee to work on the recommendation that will best suit the Nigerian system to the party leadership and which they have done that.
Fayemi made this revelation while speaking to journalists in Lagos on Sunday as part of activities to mark his second year in office.
According to him, the El-Rufa’i Committee has since submitted its final report, saying that the decision is in top gear to make the proposal to the National Assembly.
He said, “True federalism is the answer” to the yearnings and aspirations of present-day Nigerians when the present challenge is anything to go by.
Fayemi revealed that the greater part of the job now lies at the shoulders of the National Assembly to review and scrutinize all previous National Conferences report and come up with what will be acceptable to all Nigerians.
He noted that many recommendations on restructuring, devolution of power, and true federalism were imbedded in these reports of the National Conferences like the Niki Tobi pane of 2014 Conference organized by the administration of President Obasanjo, and the 2014 Conference organized by the Government of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“We must confront our reality as a federation. The current structure is supportive of the unitarist model. The state structure, for now, is problematic. There is a need to move towards devolution, not only of functions but also resources,” Fayemi added.
