Aviation unions have insisted on executing the warning strike proposed last week which will result in shutting down of airports across Nigeria. The two-day warning strike, which will commence today Monday April 17, is premised on the alleged non-release of the union’s reviewed Condition of Service negotiated with four aviation agencies over seven years in addition to the planned demolition of Lagos offices of some agencies. The development could leave many air passengers stranded in Abuja, Lagos, and other airports in the country.
The unions include; Aviation unions comprise the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCCSTRSE), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE).
The union leaders said they were left with no choice but to take drastic action to force the Federal Government to implement earlier agreements reached on minimum wage and workers general welfare.
Last week, aviation workers issued a two-day warning strike notice signed by the secretaries general of five unions stating that if the warning strike, scheduled to commence on April, 17 failed, an indefinite strike would be embarked upon.
Other grievances according to the unions is the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage consequential adjustments and arrears for workers of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency since 2019.
