The Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has advised Nigerians against traveling to Northern Cyprus due to alleged reports of Nigerians being killed and subjected to human rights abuses in the country.
The Director-General, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa gave the warning on Thursday during the State House Ministerial Media Briefing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to her, “Think twice before going to Northern Cyprus. We can’t do much for Nigerians there. Our students are being killed daily”.
She further stated that Northern Cyprus is only recognized by Turkiye (formerly known as Turkey); it, therefore, lacks the robust mechanism that would enable the Nigerian government to seek justice for several Nigerian students who were allegedly killed there.
Officially known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Northern Cyprus is recognized by the international community and the United Nations (UN) as a part of the Republic of Cyprus.
