Students of tertiary institutions under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Monday protested in parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, where they grounded activities of the Federal Ministry of Education. The students, who demanded an immediate end to the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to continue protesting indefinitely, until their demand is met.
Nigeria’s Minister of education, Adamu Adamu, on Monday night met with protesting students at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and pledged the commitment of federal government towards addressing their concerns.
The minister, according to reports had earlier walked out on the students on Monday morning during their protests over what he reportedly described as rude conduct of the student leaders.
Adamu assured the protesting students that the striking members of the ASUU will soon return to the classrooms.
ASUU says it will not call off the one-month warning strike it began on February 14. Emmanuel Osodeke, President of the union, who spoke yesterday, emphasized that ASUU would not be backing down on the strike as the FG has consistently failed to keep the promises made to the union years back.
Meanwhile, ASUU and federal government delegation are scheduled to meet later today (Tuesday) to continue conciliation meeting.
