According to eye witness reports, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) surrounded the residence of the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, which is situated at Wuse Zone 4, Abuja since around 9:30 am on Wednesday. After hours of failing to secure his arrest, the EFCC operatives reportedly reinforced with support from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The reasons for the siege is not yet clearly known but speculators suggests it is connected to the allegation of a N84 billion money laundering charge leveled against the former governor by the anti-graft commission.
The present Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo later arrived Bello’s residence, during the course of the siege and departed after a while, with unconfirmed reports claiming that Bello was in Ododo’s vehicle.
Further unconfirmed reports claim that a Federal High Court in Abuja granted the EFCC permission on Wednesday afternoon to arrest Bello, prior to his supposed arraignment on Thursday.
This development comes after a Kogi State High Court issued a conflicting ruling, which restrains the anti-graft commission from arresting, detaining or prosecuting the former governor.
