The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday announced the rejection of the application bail filed by suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police and former head of the IGP Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari. The court also rejected the application by his co-defendants, with whom he faces charges of illegal dealing in cocaine, including ACP Sunday Ubia, Inspector Simon Agirgba, and Inspector John Nuhu. Other Defendants in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/57/2022, are; ASP Bawa James, as well as two drug traffickers that were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwane.
Trial Justice Emeka Nwite in the ruling on Monday held that the prosecution has placed sufficient materials before the court to warrant the refusal of bail to the defendants, and granted an accelerated hearing of the case.
The prosecution has led sufficient evidence linking the defendants to the alleged offences.
“It is trite that bail is not absolute and at the discretion of the court. Therefore, the application for bail is hereby refused,” the judge held.
Nwite instructed the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to transfer the Defendants to prison custody, shortly after he denied them bail.
