A 3-year-old accidentally shot and killed one-year-old sibling with an unsecure handgun on Monday in northern San Diego County, United States, authorities said. The local police responded to a call from the child on Monday morning about 7:30 a.m. at a home in the 1100 block of S. Stagecoach Lane in Fallbrook. Upon arrival, they found that the 3-year-old child had accidentally shot and killed their one-year-old sister. The child had found an unsecured handgun in the home and was able to access it.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department the one-year-old was found with a head injury. Fire department personnel transported the child to Palomar Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m. despite lifesaving efforts.

Lt. Joseph Jarjura of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said "the Sheriff's Department extends our sympathies to the family and those affected by this death."

"Sheriff's Homicide investigators are working to gather more information to determine the circumstances of the death." Jarjura added.

There were no outstanding suspects and there was no threat to the community, Jarjura said.

Identities of kids have not been revealed by authorities out of respect for the family.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the actual circumstances surrounding the incident.

The US has been reeling from the issue of gun violence, and as the threat continues to grow, another bizarre incident has taken place in California.
