Emmerson Mnangagwa has been sworn in as the President of Zimbabwe following the resignation of former President, Robert Mugabe. Mnangagwa's swearing in ceremony was witnessed by thousands of Zimbabweans who streamed into Harare's National Sports Stadium to witness the former Vice President take the oath of office.
Mnangagwa had arrived the country yesterday preparatory for his swearing in ceremony. He had left the country shortly after being sacked by Mugabe for disloyalty. His swearing in marks the end of Robert Mugabe's 37-year reign over the country.
Mugabe was forced to resign after his party, ZANU-PF sacked him as the national leader and demanded his resignation. Mugabe's refusal to relinquish power led to the commencement of impeachment proceeding against him by the Parliament. His resignation however halted the proceeding.
Before this, the nation's Military had confined him to his residence in an operation targeted at criminal elements around the President who are instrumental to the economic woes confronting the country. Although the operation was reported as a coup, the military denied it seized power from Mugabe.
