The sacked Vice President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa will arrive Harare on Wednesday ahead of his swearing in billed to take place on Thursday. Robert Mugabe had submitted his resignation letter to the National Assembly on Tuesday evening after his Party sacked him as the party leader and called for his immediate resignation. The party had accused him of highhandedness and allowing his wife to usurp constitutional powers.
The Military last week restricted him to his residence in an operation aimed at arresting criminal elements within the corridor of power. The military action also threw up widespread protests with thousands marching on the streets and calling for his resignation.
Following Mugabe's resignation, his former Vice President, Mnangagwa who was elected as the new party leader is due to return to the country today and may be sworn in as the President on interim basis until the country conducts elections in 2018.
Mnangagwa was sacked by Mugabe as Vice President after he was accused of being disrespectful. His sack was perceived by many as attempt by Mugabe to announce his wife as his successor.
Meanwhile, the main opposition has welcomed Mugabe's resignation and called on the government to work toward conducting free and fair elections.
