Ali Bongo, the deposed President of Gabon has been released from house arrest by the military junta led by General Brice Oligui Nguema. The new military leaders in the Central African nation said Bongo is free to leave the country to seek medical attention after spending eight days in detention.

In a communique on state TV on Wednesday evening, the military spokesperson Col. Ulrich Manfoumbi said the decision to free Mr. Bongo was due to “his state of health”.

“He may, if he wishes, travel abroad for medical check-ups”, Manfoumbi added.

In 2018, Mr. Bongo suffered a stroke. His health was a chief source of concern for many in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election.
