The iconic FIFA World Cup trophy touched down in Lagos on Friday after the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, received it in Abuja on Wednesday. The FIFA World Cup trophy is on a four day tour of Nigeria. A press conference was held at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
In attendance were Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr; The Nigeria Football Federation, President, Amaju Pinnick; NFF First Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi; NFF Second Vice President, Shehu Dikko; Former Super Eagles captain, Peter Rufai, among others.
The FIFA delegation, led by Christian Karembeu, Peter Njonjo, and the President Coca-Cola West Africa were also in attendance. In his speech, Njonjo was confident that the Super Eagles can win the World Cup in Russia.
“We have a good team that can conquer the world if we believe,” Njonjo told the media in Lagos. The World Cup trophy also visited the British Broadcasting bureau office in Lagos on Friday where former Nigeria winger, Femi Opabunmi accompanied Karembeu.
The FIFA World Cup trophy will visit 91 cities in 51 countries across six continents. Meanwhile, Lagos fans will get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close to the trophy that will be on display at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos on Saturday from 9am.
The FIFA World Cup trophy will continue its globetrotting journey to Dakar, Senegal on Sunday.
