Emerging reports indicate that the National Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Alhaji Maitama Sule is dead. He died this morning at a yet-to-be disclosed hospital in Cairo, Egypt's capital city.
The Dan Masanin Kano until his death had served the nation in various capacity including the Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints, Nigeria's representative to the a United Nations and the Minister of National Guidance under the Shehu Shagari Administration. While at the United Nations, Sule was appointed to head the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid. He exploited this opportunity to assist in ending the reign of apartheid regime.
He had contested the presidential primary election in 1979 under the platform of the National Party of Nigeria, losing to Shagari.
Meanwhile, Kano State Government has declared Tuesday as a work free day in memory of the Late elder statesman who hailed from the state, as his funeral is to commence at 4:00pm on Tuesday the Emirs Palace, Kano.
