The Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, earlier today escaped attempted assassination after yet to be identified gunmen shot into a crowd he had mobilised to protest against the State Government.

Dino Melaye has been a fierce critic of perceived maladministration in his home State and personally led the crowd in a protest which began around 11am at the entrance of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.

A few hours into the largely peaceful protest, gunmen invaded the venue shooting sporadically. The ensuing pandemonium sent protesters scampering for safety.

Eyewitnesses claimed several persons were injured including a few who sustained gunshot injuries.

In a series of tweets shortly after the attack, Dino Melaye said two persons with gunshot wounds were being treated at DSS.

The Senator also said his bullet-proof vehicle was riddled with bullets by the attackers who he claimed included “Government House police with some criminals accompanied by Lokoja caretaker chairman and one Abdullahi Dollar who is SA political.”

“There was serious exchange of gunshots between d DSS, policemen and Government assassins. DSS I thank u for saving my life after God.

“I thank God for my bullet proof car,” the Senator tweeted.

Gunmen, on April 15, laid siege on the Senator’s at Ayetoro-Gbede in Ijumu local government area of Kogi State. The siege lasted at least an hour with the attackers shooting into the building.
