Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, has resigned from his position in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet. The former Plateau State Governor who served as the Director-General of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation months leading to the February Presidential election tendered his resignation after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, marking his departure from the cabinet.
The former two-term Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly will now proceed to the National Assembly as a Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial after the Court of Appeal ruled in his favour, after overturning the previous verdict. The court nullified the election of Air Vice Marshall Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Confirming his resignation, a presidential aide, Imran Muhammad via his X handle stated that “President Tinubu, Accepted Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong's resignation from the cabinet, and his valedictory will hold the next FEC meeting.”
With his wealth of experience, aside from enhancing the All Progressives Congress (APC) representation in the Senate, it is believed that Lalaong's move to the Senate will position him among other ranking senators of the federal republic.
