Contrary to the recent proscription and declaration of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization by the Federal Government, the United States Government says it does not consider the organization a terrorist group. The Spokesman of the US Embassy in Nigeria, Russell Brooks made the position of the US known in a statement released to newsmen in Abuja.

He reiterated the commitment of the US to the unity of the country and assured that it would support peaceful resolution of the various crises affecting the country.

“The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy.

“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law,” Brooks added .
