The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to proceed on indefinite strike any moment from now if the Federal Government fails to secure the release of the recently abducted University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) lecturers as well as reinforce security arrangement around the institution.
The President of the Union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi gave the warning on Sunday while speaking with newsmen.
“Our union is no doubt saddened by the UNIMAID incident. It is a concrete manifestation of our fears all along. As far back as June 9, we expressed our fears about the alarming security situation in the Maiduguri metropolis and particularly in UNIMAID. Those fears we expressed are beginning to manifest concretely"
“The situation could have been better handled. Our members, who were carrying out their legitimate duties, were made vulnerable to this experience"
He added that ‘‘we have told the government to take the necessary steps and get our members in captivity released or else, we may be forced to call out our members. But we are getting assurances now that the government is going to do the needful.”
Recall that last week a team of oil explorers made up of lecturers from Geology Department of UNIMAID, security operatives and CJTF were ambushed by members of Boko Haram. The Sect reportedly abducted some of the victims. Few days ago, the sect released a short video of three of the lecturers appealing to the government to meet the demands of the sect in order to secure their release.
Although the Military had claimed that victims were rescued moments after the attack, the Nigeria Army yesterday retracted the earlier statement, but assured that efforts were underway to ensure the victims are released.
