Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, wife of the embattled Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa who represented the Buchi Northern Senatorial district between 20215 to 2023 said contrary to her husband’s claim, she never at any point in time compromised the integrity of her office. The justice was reacting to comments from Nigerians that went viral over media quoting her husband of seeking Favour while serving as senator for his colleagues through his wife while she was serving as the Appeal Court President.
Senator Bulkachuwa during a valedictory session of the 9th Assembly held Saturday last week was quoted saying, “I look at faces in this chamber who have come to me and sought my help when my wife was the President of the Court of Appeal, and I’m sure…
“And I must thank particularly, my wife, whose freedom and independence I encroached upon while she was in office, and she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment, and extended her help to my colleagues…”
His comment elicited negative reactions from across Nigerians, some of whom were; Olisa Agbakoba, a former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, calling for the arrest and persecution of the former senator for admitting pervasion of justice publicly.
However, reacting to the comments, the former justice Bulkachuwa claimed that her husband's insinuation was far from truth.
In her statement she said, “My attention has been drawn to the trending video of what was said by my husband Senator Adamu M. Bulkachuwa. I want to state categorically that I never at any time compromised my oath of office to favor any party who appeared before me throughout my judicial career spanning 40 years of service to my country.
“My decisions were always based on the facts, the law and in accordance with my conscience and oath of office.
She added, “Also, as President of the Court of Appeal, my fellow justices of the court can attest to the fact that I never interfered with the independence of any of the justices of the court in the discharge of their judicial functions”.
Earlier during an interview with BBC Hausa program, Bulkachuwa retracted that his comment was misrepresented, saying that his was interrupted by the president of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan before he could conclude his explanation.
