A Pan-Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho has been released from detention following persuasion by Afenifere on President Buhari and Benin Republic government. A statement released by Maxwell Adeleye, Communication Secretary, Ilana Oodua(100) confirmed the release today, Monday.
The spokesperson disclosed that Igboho was handed over to 100 leaders, Prof. Banji Akintoye by the Benin Republic government after spending 231 days in custody.
100 is an umbrella body of the Yoruba self-determination group.
A source close to the Nigerian government, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Igboho was released in collaboration with the Nigerian Government based on health grounds.
However, added that Igboho has been down with an ailment leading to a deteriorating health condition that necessitated his release to go and seek medication by the authorities.
Adeleye said, Igboho freedom, at last, is “a triumph of truth over darkness in Yoruba land”.
