Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK) held their first meeting on Monday of the Nigeria-UK Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue in London this week.
National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd) and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor met with their British counterparts, UK National Security Adviser, Sir Stephen Lovegrove and UK Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin to discuss military cooperation between the two countries.
According to reports, The Nigeria-UK Security and Defence Partnership were agreed upon between the two countries in 2018 but this week’s discussions would be the first meeting since the 2018 agreement.
The Dialogue would cover a variety of issues such as counter-terrorism, serious and organized crimes, civilian policing and human rights.
The discussion is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday and a communiqué is expected to be released.
British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing said, “Looking forward to the UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership discussions over the next few days. Great to have this chance to expand our security and defence cooperation to improve how we respond to shared security threats.”
