The Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu says the call by some opposition for the sack of service chiefs is “out of place”.
Shehu said contrary to the opinion of the opposition group, the service Chiefs serve at the prerogative of Mr. President, he holds the power to hire and fire them. Therefore those calling for their sack should look for something different to hold onto.
The spokesperson said, as long as President Buhari is a concern, he is satisfied with what the service chiefs are doing.
Garba Shehu stated this during his interactive session with Arise TV on Monday night
Following the massacre of 43 farmers in Zabarmari village, a suburb in Maiduguri, Borno state, a call for the sack of service chiefs has being re-echoed across Nigeria’s different groups.
According to Garba Shehu, “I am not aware that the tenure of service chiefs is subjected to any law or regulation that is clearly stated. They serve at the pleasure of the president and (if) the president is satisfied with their performance, he keeps them. The buck stops on his table —with due respect to the feelings of Nigerians.
He added that the demand for the sack of service Chiefs is out of place as President Buhari is not compelled by any law to bow to the pressure from the opposition political party, therefore, his boss cannot be cowed.
Shehu explained that the opposition has clamored this for a long, he said they should be reminded that the decision to do so lies with President Buhari; he decides who stays and who should go as long as he wishes.
