Following the elevation of the Department of State Services (DSS), Institute for Security Studies (ISS) to the National Institute of Security Studies (NISS) by the Federal Government, the Institute will now be equivalent to the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and National Defence College (NDC).
Mr. Peter Afunanya, the spokesperson of the DSS made the disclosure yesterday while briefing journalists in Abuja, saying the development was after President Muhammadu Buhari's recent signing of the Act which Established the NISS under the full administrative control of the DSS, with financial autonomy.
Afunanya explained that the institute aims to promote inter-agency, inter-service as well as international cooperation among local, and regional intelligence and law enforcement agencies in order to achieve global peace and security.
He added that the institute will be a focal centre for the provision of proficient and enhanced training for middle and top-level managers of security for the advancement of topmost conflict prevention, alleviation and resolution.
While speaking on the certification, the spokesperson said the institute which provides senior law enforcement personnel with skills for strategic management will award postgraduate diploma and a degree in intelligence and security management.
"the institute would award participants on completion of their programme the designation Fellow of Security Institute (fsi), and the certificate awarded shall be at par with the certificate awarded by the NIPSS and NDC," Afunanya said.
Also, NISS would elevate deserving PhD holders the rank of professors in their areas of specialiization.
