The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has slated January 8th, 2019 as a day of national protest on the call for an improved minimum wage. The labor unions reached this agreement after a national executive council meeting was held in Abuja on December 21st, 2018.
It can be recalled that the Labour Unions and the three tiers of Government have been at loggerheads over a new National Minimum Wage. The Union is demanding that the wage should be increased to N30, 000 but the State Governors insists they can only afford N22,500.
NLC revealed that the January 8th nationwide protest would be to express anger and dissatisfaction over the lukewarm attitude of Government towards workers welfare and improved condition of service.
According to the NLC president, Ayuba Wabba the protest is to express anger and total dissatisfaction over the delay by the Federal Government in transmitting, enacting and implementing the new National Minimum wage of N30,000.
The National Working Committee (NEC)-in-Session approved that the protests should hold simultaneously, in all state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja on January 8, 2019.
Waba also added that, the NEC mandates all industrial unions and state councils to fully mobilize workers and coordinate with other labour unions for the protest describing it as "the mother-of-all protest".
