The House of Representatives has reached a resolution to investigate and prevent the alleged leakage of classified documents to the general public, describing it as an act of sabotage. This decision was taken after the adoption of a motion by Rep. Babatunde Adejare at the plenary on Thursday, titled: ‘Need to Address Leakage of Classified Security Documents to the Public.’
Prior to the adoption of this motion, the Committee on National Security and Intelligence was mandated by the House to “carry out a detailed investigation on the matter and report back within two weeks for further legislative action.”
Adejare said, “The House notes the recurring incidents of leakage of classified security documents to the public through various social media platforms, online print media and other sources, which are jeopardising the fight against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other crimes in the country.
“The House is concerned that the leakage of classified security documents and other acts of sabotage is causing failure of intelligence gathering, misunderstanding and lack of cohesion among operatives involved in different operations against insurgency and other acts of terrorism in Nigeria.”
The lawmaker stated that this situation was also encouraging other acts of criminality such as jailbreaks, mass abductions, etc.
According to him, “The House is worried that if such acts of sabotage are left unchecked, they may pose great risks to the lives of security personnel and ultimately imperil the country.”
