The United States Supreme Court has rejected efforts by individual states to disqualify Donald Trump from running for the 2024 USA presidential election. This judgment is coming at the back of Colorado state barring Mr Trump from its Republican primary, arguing he incited the 2021 Capitol riot.
The Supreme Court on Monday in a unanimous ruling, specific to Colorado, and also to other states in the future noted that only Congress has the power to disqualify any presidential candidate. This ruling is coming a day before Super Tuesday, the day when the largest number of states hold their presidential primaries and caucuses.
According to the top court, “We conclude that states may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But states have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 for federal offices, especially the presidency.”
Aside from Colorado, Maine and Illinois have also barred Trump based on the 14th Amendment, but those decisions were put on hold based on the Supreme Court’s ruling.
