Dana Elaine Owens, known professionally by her stage name, Queen Latifah, has lost her dear mother, Rita Owens, following a protracted battle with a chronic heart condition.

The 48-year-old rapper and actress broke the sad news on Wednesday. In a statement to Essence she revealed that though she is heartbroken she knows her mom is at peace.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my mother, Rita Owens passed away today,” Latifah said on Wednesday, to the press.

“She had struggled with a heart condition for many years and her battle is now over. I am heartbroken but know she is at peace,” Latifah said.

The "Girls Trip" actress, who also shared what kind of woman her mother was said; “Anyone that has ever met her knows what a bright light she was on this earth. She was gentle, but strong, sweet, but sassy, worldly but pragmatic, a woman of great faith and certainly the love of my life.”

Latifah's mom passed away just a day after she appreciated her fans for their support and asked them to pray for Rita’s speedy recovery.

In the statement, she thanked all the people who showed her support,

“Thank you for your kindness, support and respect for our privacy at this time. Much Love, Dana Owens (aka Queen Latif‎ah), forever Rita Owens' daughter.”
