The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye has finally submitted himself for arrest after seven days of a siege on his Maitama residence, Abuja. Recall that about 20 officers of the police were deployed to Melaye’s residence on Friday, December 28 to effect his arrest. However, he did not surrender to the Police, saying he was not in Abuja.
Speaking on why the Police wanted the lawmaker arrested, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police, Jimoh Moshood told newsmen in Abuja that Melaye alongside his ‘armed thugs’ shot one Sergeant Danjuma Saliu in July.
“The Police operatives currently in the residence of Senator Dino Melaye are to effect his arrest to answer to the case of attempted culpable homicide on the shooting of a Police Officer, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force (PMF) while on duty at a stop and search point along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi state.
“The above offense was committed by Senator Dino Melaye and his armed thugs in Kogi State on the 19th July, 2018 when they shot and wounded a police officer, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force (PMF) while on duty at a stop and search point along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi state.
“The Police Officer is yet to recover from the gunshot injury he sustained during the attack and still under intensive medical care,” the statement reads.
Melaye is currently standing trial in more than one suit. He has been accused of illegal possession of arms, gun running and sponsoring hoodlums in Kogi State.
In a separate trial, he was accused of a six-count charge, bordering on attempted suicide, attempt to escape from custody and damage of police property.
Melaye is currently at the Force Headquarters and may be moved to Kogi State where he would be arraigned. Prior to his arrest, he had raised an alarm that the Police was planning to 'arrest and inject him to death'.
