The Police Service Commission (PSC) has called for the disbandment of the Special Police Constabulary; a quasi-police unit created to aid in community policing. The Commission stated that constabularies should have uniform different from the main Nigeria Police Force (NPF), adding that it was dangerous to arm a group of people to maintain law and order across the nation, especially without basic financial remuneration.
This was made known in a statement issued on Thursday by Ikechukwu Ani, PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, stating that “the Police Service Commission is no longer comfortable with the organization and operations of the Special Police Constabulary nationwide.”
According to the statement, “There have been several reports of unprofessional conduct by officers of the outfit, a quasi-police formation created to assist in community policing.
“Reports of their unprofessional conduct range from high-handedness in dealing with citizens to bare-faced extortion on our roads and in communities.”
Chairman of the PSC, Solomon Arase, a retired Inspector General of Police (IGP), stated that the Commission will work closely with the NPF’s leadership to sanitize the operations of the Special Police Constabulary.
