Ex-governor of Anambra State, Wille Obiano has been granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after spending days in custody. Obiano was granted administrative bail by the anti-graft agency today. Parts of the bail conditions for the one-time governor was to provide two directors in the Federal Public Service with verified landed properties in the nation's capital as sureties.
The Chairman of the commission Abdulrasheed Bawa while addressing journalists at its headquarters stated that the former governor had been cooperating with the commission on its investigations. More so, that Obiano's arrest was not politically driven.
“There is nothing political about the arrest and investigation of the former Governor of Anambra State. You all know what the EFCC stands for.
“We investigate crimes, we look at people that have committed crimes and we link it up together and then we go to court. That is all we have been doing and that is what we will continue to do,” Bawa said.
“We have been accused of media trial. But we will continue to do our investigation professionally.
“He (Obiano) has been granted bail and we are waiting for him to perfect his bail conditions; he has been cooperating with us and everything is going on well,” Bawa added.
The EFCC revealed that the ex-governor had been placed on a watch list since November 2021 for the misappropriation of five billion naira meant for a Sure-P program and Thirty-Seven billion naira Security Vote funds that were withdrawn n cash at his instance, but for the immunity, he enjoyed as the then governor he was untouchable until his tenure expired.
