A new study has shown that though radiation emitted by cell phones present less risk for humans high radiation levels is capable of causing cancers in the heart of laboratory animals.

According to National Toxicology Program senior scientist, Dr. John Boucher, their 10-year, $25 million study looked at the adverse effects of these radiations on mice and rats in the laboratories.

Dr. Boucher says that the research shows that male rats have an amplified risk of schwannoma or cancerous tumours in the heart after being exposed to high levels of the radiation. Schwannomas are a rare type of nerve cell tumours.

FG To Conduct Nationwide Cancer Screening

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, says the Federal Government has concluded plans to roll-out nationwide screening for most common types of cancers.

A statement issued by Mrs Boade Akinola, Director Media and Public Relations of the ministry on Sunday in Abuja, also said individuals have roles to play to check cancer.

A new study by the World Bank has revealed that one in five Nigerians representing 22 per cent of the total populace on an average, are chronically depressed. A new study by researchers from Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark and Stanford University, USA, has linked migraines to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, blood clots and irregular heart rate.

The study published in the journal The BMJ, revealed that although the absolute risks were low, Migraine could be a significant risk factor for most cardiovascular diseases.

The study sampled 51,032 participants (patients) with migraine and 510,320 people from the general population who were matched on age, sex, and calendar year.

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo has ordered the immediate release of N100 million as first tranche payment for the procurement of equipment to fight Lassa fever.

Obaseki said the fund would be used to purchase four dialysis machines, ventilators, personal protective equipment, drugs and other consumables required for the treatment of Lassa fever patients.
