Justice Mandisa Maya has been appointed as the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of the Republic of South Africa. The appointment which was announced on Friday by the Office of the President makes her the first woman to occupy the position.
South Africa President Jacob Zuma, in a congratulatory message to Justice Maya, said: “her appointment to the position elevates her to the third highest position in the Judicial Branch‚ after the Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic.
“We wish to congratulate her for being the first woman to occupy such a high position in the Judiciary and wish Justice Maya all the best in her new important responsibility of advancing our constitutional democracy.”
Justice Maya has previously been a Supreme Court judge in Namibia, a Court of Appeal judge in Lesotho and acting president of the Supreme Court.
