Zimbabwe’s main opposition MDC party has appointed an acting president following the death of its leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who passed away last night after a long illness. Nelson Chamisa, the party’s former deputy, was nominated as interim president as hundreds of party supporters gathered outside the headquarters on Thursday to grieve and celebrate Mr Tsvangirai’s life.

Renowned Zimbabwe opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai has reportedly died in a South African hospital. The former Prime Minister, 65 died from colon cancer. The Vice President of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Elias Mudzuri who announced his death on Wednesday evening, said "he died this evening. The family communicated this to me"

Cyril Ramaphosa has become South Africa's president a day after embattled leader Jacob Zuma resigned.

He was the only candidate nominated by parliament, which is dominated by his African National Congress. MPs broke into song at the announcement.

In his first presidential speech, Mr Ramaphosa, 65, said he would tackle the corruption which allegedly became widespread under Mr Zuma.

Ethiopian Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn has resigned unexpectedly, saying he hoped to end years of unrest and political upheaval.

In a televised address, he said his resignation was "vital in the bid to carry out reforms that would lead to sustainable peace and democracy".

Mr Hailemariam, who has led the country since 2012, also stepped down as chairman of the ruling coalition.
