Microsoft plans on implementing machine learning tools to improve user experience. The new Excel will be capable of reading data and providing what Microsoft calls “insights,” which are data visualization and analysis tools. With the update Excel will be able to understand the user’s inputs and then pull additional information from the internet as necessary.

New data types will be added which will allow users to “tag” additional information and automatically search for related data.

Microsoft also announced that Excel will soon be able to pull in machine learning models that a company’s data scientists have created to analyze information in Excel, and you can also now use JavaScript to write more complex scripts for manipulating data or pulling in data from virtually any third-party service with an Application Programming Interface (API).

The upgrade will be released early 2018. Additionally, a subscription-free version of Microsoft Office will be released in the second half of 2018.
