Hanson Robotics, the company behind the popular humanoid robot ‘Sophia the robot’ has announced plans to mass-produce robots by the end of 2021. The company, based in Hong Kong said four models of the humanoid including Sophia would begin rolling out of factories in the first half of the year.

“The world of COVID-19 is going to need more and more automation to keep people safe,” David Hanson, founder, and CEO, Hanson Robotics said.

According to the CEO, robotics can play a role in sectors including Healthcare, customer service, industries as well as retail and airlines.

“Sophia and Hanson's robots are unique by being so human-like,”

“That can be so useful during these times where people are terribly lonely and socially isolated,” he added.

Speaking, a Social robotics professor, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. Johan Hoorn said the pandemic will aid in building a fast-growing relationship between humans and robots.

“I can infer the pandemic will actually help us get robots earlier in the market because people start to realize that there is no other way.”
