The Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Seidu Mohammed said the agency is committed to developing the country’s indigenous technology in the basic space technology.
Prof Mohammed who was represented by Dr. Spencer Onu, DirectorCentre for Satellite Technology Development (CSTD),disclosed this during the Space Week and Exhibition, at the NASRDA Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS) in Nsukka, Enugu State.
The programme was themed “Basic Space Science for Development”, according to The Guardian’s report.
Mohammed revealed that the Federal Government has put efforts in place through the agency to ensure that itdevelops projects and actions to make Nigeria a knowledge-based economy.
He further said the agency has planned for the production of scientific tools such as telescopes to help sustain scientific research in the country. Though the cost of production of telescopes was high, the center would provide available resources for the development of the tools.
“We believe that the telescope proposed by CBSS is very useful and functional to our requirement.
“It has been under construction for four years now but we have to intervene now because two years ago, money was allocated for it but was not approved by the National Assembly”, he said.
