In preparation for the 2023 Population and Housing Census, the National Population Commission (NPC) has officially launched its e-recruitment portal for ad-hoc staff for the exercise. The Commission stated that it is expecting not less than 25 million applications for the vacant jobs, adding that the portal has already been tested during the Pre-test and Trial census. This was disclosed during a meeting on Monday at the NPC’s headquarters in Abuja by its Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Isa-Kwarra, who stated that majority of the ad-hoc personnel would be recruited from the communities where they are resident.

He said, “This will remove huge logistics of moving personnel across the country. Consequently, every community will have the opportunity of contributing to the census workforce, thereby ensuring that the people are adequately counted”.

According to him, the job categories available for the upcoming exercise are facilitators, training centre administrators, monitoring and evaluations officers, data quality managers and assistants, supervisors, enumerators and special work force.

Kwarra said, “The number of functionaries to be recruited in each category will depend on the number of available vacancies in each state, which will be derived largely from the total number of Enumeration Areas (EA) in the states”.

He further said, “To us in the Commission, the quality of staff that will perform the census activities are very important. Therefore, having good knowledge of the content of the census document, the technique and the organization of the census process is key to the success of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

“While a good recruitment exercise will not by itself necessarily guarantee a successful census, a badly conducted recruitment process will inevitably lead to problems and increase the risk of an unsuccessful census”.

According to the Commission, the basic requirements for the ad-hoc staff application are National Identification Number (NIN); valid and functional Gmail account, phone number, commercial bank account, educational qualifications, referees and “access to and knowledge on the use of computers, tablets and smartphones is an added advantage”.

Key stakeholders such as National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), amongst others were decorated during the meeting.
