Tech giant Google has today Tuesday April, 19 announced the launch of a new product development centre in Nairobi, Kenya, the first of its kind in Africa. This comes with over 100 vacancies for its newly opened office in Kenya's capital Nairobi. In a statement shared on Tuesday, the firm is now looking for product managers, software engineers, senior UX designers and UX researchers who will be tasked with solving technical challenges. Some of the responsibilities will include improving the smartphone experience for people in Africa while improving its infrastructure across the continent.

"We’re looking for talented, creative, and collaborative people who can help solve difficult and important technical challenges, such as improving the smartphone experience for people in Africa, or building products that will help everyone to thrive together.

"Alongside great technical knowledge and a passion for solving hard problems together with others, you’ll need to understand how people across the continent use their phones every day and the challenges they face," the statement read in part.

This comes after the tech giant revealed plans to invest $1 billion over the next five years in October last year. The center is Google’s second major research and development investment in Africa, after the tech giant set up an AI and research center in Ghana in 2019.

“Africa has been at the forefront of innovation, and we believe that we are going to continue to develop and innovate right here from the continent,” said Google’s policy lead for Sub-Saharan Africa.
