Nigeria Sets Up Two New Satellite Companies

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami has unveiled two new satellite companies on Tuesday created from the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT). The companies are the Satellite Infrastructure Company (SIC) and the Satellite Broadband and Broadcasting Company (SBBC). The companies were unveiled during the just concluded NIGCOMSAT Stakeholders’ Forum titled “NIGCOMSAT Ltd: The Present and The Future.”


In a statement issued by Adamu Idris, General Manager, Corporate Affairs and Special Project in Abuja, the Minister said the SBBC will provide downstream satellite services including broadband internet services and broadcasting services, while the SIC will provide satellite upstream services including Transponder Leasing, In-orbit-Testing (IOT) services and Carrier Spectrum Management (CSM) services.


Speaking, the managing director, NIGCOMSAT, Abimbola Alale said the creation of the companies was aimed at enhancing better opportunities and risks, adding that NIGCOMSAT is a National digital economy service infrastructure that provides satellite solutions to various customers.


“As we strive to achieve our vision to be the leading satellite communication solutions provider in Nigeria and Africa, NIGCOMSAT in 2020, obtained approval to form two subsidiary companies (SUBCOs).”


She noted that the “NIGCOMSAT is a key player in the Nigeria National Broadband Plan (NNBP 2020-2025), as published by the Federal ministry of communications and digital economy and launched by President Muhammadu Buhari.


”The forum, thus, highlighted the contributions of NIGCOMSAT Ltd. as a national digital economy service infrastructure, providing satellite communication solutions to an array of customers.”
