FBI Investigation: NPF Suspends Abba Kyari, Sets-up Panel

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba has recommended the immediate suspension of the head of the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari over his alleged involvement with international fraudster, Ramon Abbas popularly known as ‘Hushpuppi’ who is been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. According to US court documents, Hushpuppi named Abba Kyari over his involvement in an alleged $1.1m internet fraud, an allegation which Kyari has since denied any wrongdoing on his part.


In a statement on Sunday, the police spokesperson, Frank Mba revealed that the IGP addressed a later to the Police Service Commission (PSC) and dated 31st July 2021, explaining that Kyari’s suspension is in line with the internal disciplinary processes of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).


The statement also explained that Kyari’s suspension was necessary to create an enabling environment for the NPFs Special Investigation Panel (SIP) to diligently carry out its investigations into the high level of allegations levelled against Kyari.


The statement reads: “The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer.


“The SIP comprising of four senior police officers is headed by DIG Joseph Egbunike, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department.


“The SIP, inter alia, is to undertake a detailed review of all the allegations against DCP Abba Kyari by the US Government as contained in relevant documents that have been availed by the NPF by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).


“The SIP is also to obtain a detailed representation of DCP Abba Kyari to all the allegations levelled against him, conduct further investigations as it deems fit, and submit recommendations to guide further actions by the Force leadership on the matter.”


Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has also suspended Abba Kyari over his indictment by the FBI in the alleged $1.1m internet fraud.


This was signed by the commission’s Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani in a statement titled, ‘FBI indictment: PSC suspends DCP Abba Kyari, directs IGP to furnish it with information on further developments.’


The statement reads in part, “The Police Service Commission has suspended Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head, Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force from the exercise of the Powers and functions of his office.


“Abba Kyari’s suspension took effect from Saturday, July 31st, 2021, and would subsist pending the outcome of the investigation in respect of his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States”.
