The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) disclosed on Tuesday that over 180 million telephone lines are now linked with National Identity Numbers (NIN). This was made known by the Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof Umar Danbatta during the Public Inquiry on three Regulatory Instruments on the Rule Making Process for industry stakeholders at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, this was made possible through the efforts of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) by capturing the biodata of over 60 million Nigerians. He added that an average of 3 to 4 SIM cards is connected to a NIN.

Danbatta also listed the three Instruments for stakeholder’s consideration: Spectrum Trading to facilitate deployment of 5G technology, telephone subscribers’ registration guidelines, and SIM card replacement guidelines.

Regarding 5G technology, he said, “We are looking at robust contributions from stakeholders. We believe that the combination of mid-band and low band will provide meaningful 5G services across the country. And it is our belief that new entrants can also take advantage.

“However, the 5G Spectrum will be assigned administratively, but it will be determined by price and subject to the approval of the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.”
