Lawmakers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives have threatened legal action against the executive in the wake of the suspension of Twitter operations in the country. The caucus leader, Kingsley Chinda argued that the measures were a violation of the extant provisions of the law. Describing the measure as a violation of the doctrine of separation of powers, the lawmakers enjoined the Federal Government to reverse the decision in the overall interest of the country. “As expected, the announcement has sent shockwaves amongst believers in democracy and rule of law across Nigeria and the entire world. “We note with great concern that the suspension of Twitter by the Federal Government is one more step in attempts to restrict the fundamental rights of Nigerians, as enshrined in Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“Nigerians will recall that on August 4, 2020, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, issued an Amended National Broadcasting Code for the country, which imposes restrictions on fundamental freedoms,” they said.

Recall that the PDP has raised the alarm over the ban on the microblogging giant, Twitter by the Federal Government, saying it was a prelude to a clampdown on the media in the country. In a statement on Sunday by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party accused the national leadership of APC as being behind the ban.

According to PDP revelations available to it showed how APC leaders at one of their party’s national caucus meetings recommended the regulation of social media in Nigeria and how they had been plotting to obliterate internet-based interaction platforms like Twitter.
