The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned telecom consumers to avoid the sale and use of GSM boosters. This was published on the commission's website and signed by NCC's spokesperson, Ikechukwu Adinde who specified that only network operators licensed by the commission are allowed to use GSM boosters.

NCC stated it was protecting the interest of consumers and ensuring good quality of service, in accordance with the provisions of Section 131 (1) of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003.

The commission said it has begun monitoring GSM boosters and offenders would be arrested and/or fined.

Other countries like India, the United States, etc. have also placed restrictions on GSM boosters.

GSM boosters, also known as amplifiers or repeater are devices capable of amplifying the network strength of a particular network and can also interfere with other radio frequency equipment.

GSM boosters are designed to increase browsing, download, and upload speed, etc.
