The Federal government has approved the activation of the new Subscriber Identification Module (SIM), Although this exercise can only be feasible with a compulsory valid National Identification Number (NIN).

The execution of this newest policy and issuance of new SIMs will take effect from the 19th of April 2021 as long as proper verification is conducted and guidelines explicitly adhered to.

This will be in line with the Revised National Digital Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration developed in March 2021, to subdue an earlier policy that was approved on 4th February last year 2020.

The final amendments to this revised policy came to a halt yesterday 14th April 2021 by the President's directives to make the use of NIN mandatory for SIM registrations.

In a statement signed by the Technical Assistant IT to Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Femi Adeluyi, he stated that Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, Section 23(a), specifies the role of the Minister to include the formulation, determination, and monitoring of the general policy for the communication sector.
