The National Communication Commission (NCC) is set to establish a mechanism to beam its search light on internet users to fortify the nation’s cyberspace against possible attack.
The initiative was motivated by ensuring consumer privacy and data protection as well as protecting children against abusing some dangerous content of the internet, the commission revealed.
The Deputy Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Alhaji Ismail Adedigba, disclosed this at the 109th edition of Consumer Outreach Program held in Osogbo, Osun state.
Adedigba during his speech said: “Realising that liberalisation of the telecoms industry has led to an unprecedented increase in the usage of internet-based solutions and services, the Nigerian Communications Commission has initiated a process to establish an internet industry code of practice for internet service providers in the country.
He added, “The internet code is a regulatory intervention expected to secure the country’s cyberspace against threats from cyber attackers and addressing issues such as online child protection, privacy, and data protection among others.”
While the commission is working hard on regulatory interventions to sanitize the cyberspace, telecoms are expected to play their role through reporting challenges to the authorities.
In her contribution, Mrs Felicia Onwuegbuchulam, the Director of Consumer Bureau advised consumers to note that as the number of internet users is increasing by the day, the commission on its side will continue to emplace measures to broaden access to the internet users for positive engagement; saying they are aware of the dishonest individuals who always want to cut corners through involvement in illegalities.
