The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has obtained the highest global standards for Information Security Management System (ISMS), making it one of the few Government-owned facilities certified under the platform in Africa, Vanguard reports.
The ISMS is a system used to manage an organization's sensitive data.
The Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Aliyu Aziz made the disclosure in Abuja. He said the commission aims to ensure the security and data information of citizens, with a view to upgrading the process of issuing National Identification Number (NIN).
Aziz also explained that the ISO/IEC 27001:2013 information system obtained has the capacity to safeguard data and information of citizens as well as legal residents in line with global practices. This is to curb the high level of cyber-attacks on national institutions, and their information vaults.
The ISO/IEC 27001:2013 is a specification of creating ISMS, which suggests documentation, internal audits, preventive and corrective actions. It also protects information including financial data, sensitive customer information among others.
The DG noted that the commission deemed it necessary after discovering that a large number of Nigerians were not in the banking and payments systems.
