A cyber-crime mastermind suspected of stealing about £870m (€1bn) has been arrested in Spain.

The suspect is alleged to be the head of the organised crime gang that ran the Carbanak and Cobalt malware campaigns that targeted banks.

Europol said the group had been active since 2013 and infiltrated more than 100 banks in that time.

Mozilla Foundation, the maker of Firefox, has temporarily pulled its advertising from Facebook over the Cambridge Analytica controversy. The leak of data from 50 million Facebook users to the political consulting firm prompted Mozilla to examine Facebook's default privacy policies, which can give third-party apps access to your profile data and activities.

Israel is investigating Facebook Inc. over possible infringement of its citizens’ privacy following reports that British consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed users’ information, the Justice Ministry said on Thursday. According to Reuters, the probe will examine “whether personal data of Israeli citizens was illegally used in a way that infringes upon their right to privacy and the provisions of the Israeli Privacy Law,” the ministry said in a statement.

Executives from Apple Inc and IBM Corp have called for more oversight on how personal data is used following the Facebook Inc breach that saw roughly 50 million users’ data misused by consultancy Cambridge Analytica. According to Reuters, Apple chief Tim Cook made this known while speaking at the three-day China Development Forum in Beijing, he said “well-crafted” regulation was required, while IBM Corp chief Virginia Rometty said users should have more agency over their own data.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said that the country’s phone subscriptions have reached 147 million as at January 2018. The Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta disclosed this during the NCC Special Day at the ongoing 29th Enugu International Trade Fair. The fair was organised by the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Mines, Industries and Agriculture (ECCIMA).

Facebook expressed outrage Tuesday over the misuse of its data as Cambridge Analytica, the British firm at the centre of a major scandal rocking the social media giant, suspended its chief executive.

The move to suspend CEO Alexander Nix came as recordings emerged in which he boasts his data company played an expansive role in Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, doing all of its research, analytics as well as digital and television campaigns.

In undercover filming captured by Britain's Channel 4 News, he is also seen boasting about entrapping politicians and secretly operating in elections around the world through shadowy front companies.

Lawmakers on both sides of the Atlantic have demanded answers after it was revealed at the weekend that Cambridge Analytica improperly harvested information from 50 million Facebook users.
