WhatsApp has announced that from January 1st, 2021, millions of smartphones worldwide would no longer be able to support the latest version of the messaging app. The company has scheduled an update of the app which would require users to either update their mobile devices’ Operating System (OS) or purchase a new smartphone. According to the company, any phone not running at least Android OS 4.0.3, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, or any iPhone not using iOS9 or the latest would no longer be able to access or operate WhatsApp. iPhone 4S to iPhone 6S were released before iOS9, but owners have the option of updating their operating system but all iPhone models between iPhone 1 to iPhone 4 would be unable to update to iOS9.
Some Android phones that would be affected include Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Desire, LG Optimum Black, and any Android phone released before 2010.
Android phone users can confirm the operating system of their device by checking the settings section while for iPhone users, it can be found under Settings > General > Software update.
